Nicotine Strength Guide: What 3mg to 50mg Actually Means

What mg/mL and percent actually measure, and how strength maps to freebase, salt, disposables, and pouches.

Every nicotine number on a Big D Vapor product page is doing one of two jobs: stating a concentration (milligrams of nicotine per milliliter of e-liquid) or stating a fixed amount (milligrams in a single pouch). Once you know which job a given number is doing, the whole range — from a 3mg freebase bottle to a 50mg salt bottle to a 6mg pouch — stops looking like a scale of "weak to strong" and starts looking like what it actually is: a set of format-specific measurements. This guide covers how mg/mL and percent relate, why freebase and salt nicotine land in different ranges, how strength pairs with the device you're vaping it in, and what to expect when you move between disposables and refillable systems.

Milligrams per milliliter versus percent

Bottled e-liquid, both freebase and nicotine salt, is labeled in milligrams per milliliter, sometimes written as just "mg." That number is a concentration: how much nicotine sits in every milliliter of liquid, not the total amount in the bottle. A 6mg bottle and a 50mg bottle come in the same sizes; the difference is how concentrated each milliliter is.

Disposables and prefilled pods often use percent instead, printed on the device or the pod housing. Both units describe the same scale: percent by volume converts to mg/mL by multiplying by roughly ten, so 5% works out to about 50mg/mL. You can see both conventions on one product line — JUUL's menthol pods are sold as 30mg and 50mg, the mg/mL version of the 5% figure printed on many other disposables.

Not every disposable in our catalog carries nicotine at all. Arro's Infinity 40K is built at 0%, and Fifty Bar's Silver Series 20K ships at 2% rather than the more common 5% — both are worth checking on the product page rather than assuming.

Freebase nicotine: the lower end of the range

Freebase is the original e-liquid nicotine format, and across our freebase category it's sold at 0mg, 3mg, 6mg, 12mg, or 18mg per milliliter, in 60mL, 100mL, or 120mL bottles. Those numbers sit low because freebase is meant to pair with higher-wattage, lower-resistance hardware that moves a large volume of vapor with each puff — direct-to-lung setups built around something like a sub-ohm tank. More vapor per puff at a lower concentration lands in roughly the same place as less vapor at a higher one, so freebase bottles scale down to match.

Nicotine salts: why the number climbs

Nicotine salt e-liquid in our catalog runs from 18mg up to 55mg per milliliter, almost always in 30mL or 60mL bottles. Salt nicotine is processed so it can sit at a much higher concentration while still drawing smoothly through a low-wattage, mouth-to-lung pod — a tighter, more resistance-y draw closer to a cigarette than to a cloud-chasing mod. Because each puff moves far less vapor than a sub-ohm setup, the liquid has to be more concentrated for the format to make sense.

How strength pairs with device and draw style

The strength number and the draw style are meant to match. A sub-ohm tank or high-wattage mod is a direct-to-lung device: airy draw, big clouds, a large volume of vapor per puff, paired with freebase at 0-18mg. A pod system or an empty replacement pod you fill yourself is a mouth-to-lung device: tighter draw, smaller clouds, built around salt nicotine at 18mg and up. Run a 55mg salt through a wide-open sub-ohm tank and every puff delivers far more nicotine than the device or the liquid was designed for; run a 3mg freebase through a tight MTL pod and it can feel like there's barely any nicotine there at all.

Disposables and prefilled pods skip the pairing question, since the strength is already matched to the fixed device sealed around it — there's no separate coil or wattage choice to make.

Nicotine pouches: a different kind of number

Nicotine pouches use a completely different measurement than anything inhaled. There's no liquid and no vapor, so there's nothing to measure per milliliter — the number on a can is the milligrams of nicotine in one pouch, full stop. ZYN sells most of its pouches at 3mg and 6mg; Juice Head's pouch line runs 6mg and 12mg; VELO spans 3mg, 6mg, and 9mg across its nicotine pouches lineup.

A 6mg pouch and a 6mg-per-mL e-liquid share a number but not a meaning. One is a fixed amount held in place under your lip; the other is a concentration drawn through a device in whatever volume that puff happens to move. They aren't interchangeable figures just because the digits match.

Moving between disposables and refillables

If you're used to a 5% disposable and want to try a refillable pod system, the closest match on paper is a 35-55mg salt e-liquid in a pod device — same mouth-to-lung draw, same general strength range, different hardware underneath. If you're coming from a disposable and eyeing an open, direct-to-lung setup instead, the equivalent range is freebase at 0-18mg, not a salt number, because sub-ohm hardware moves far more vapor per puff and was never built around salt strengths.

Frequently asked questions

Does a higher mg number mean more vapor? No. The mg/mL figure is a concentration of nicotine in the liquid, not a measure of vapor volume. How much vapor a device produces comes down to its wattage, coil, and airflow, which are separate specs from the strength printed on the bottle or pod.

Is 50mg the same figure whether it's on a salt bottle or a disposable? Yes, as a unit — 50mg/mL and a "5%" disposable land at the same concentration once percent is converted to mg/mL. What differs is the format: a bottle is a concentration you pour into a refillable device, while a disposable's nicotine is already sealed inside at that strength.

Why doesn't freebase e-liquid in your catalog go above 18mg? Freebase is formatted for direct-to-lung hardware that moves a large volume of vapor per puff, and our freebase line is built around that lower range, from 0mg up to 18mg.
